CHAPTER THIRTY-TWO

GO BLIND WITH CONFUSION

City Hall Tower Rooftop, Downtown Los Angeles, California, United States

To Gen’s devastation and disappointment, the Sweet Shop food truck was gone when she and Liv returned to the Grand Park. No one had seen who had driven off in the vehicle, and it seemed that any attempts to track it were long gone. However, they had this tiny thread of a clue that the dealer had given them.

“Follow the delivery drivers,” Gen said, mostly to herself but also to Emperor, who was perched next to her on the rooftop. After reconvening and getting some rest and food, Gen had returned the next day to keep surveillance for the food trucks. This time, she was joined by her dragon, who would make pursuing a delivery driver easier. Gen really hoped never to ride on a scooter ever again.

“I think that you should stay back when I go after the delivery driver,” Emperor said, studying the park and streets below.

“What?” Gen asked in surprise, looking up at her dragon. “Why the hell would I stay behind?”

“For a few reasons,” Emperor stated. “Firstly, we fly better together, but I can do other maneuvers that are riskier when you’re not riding on my back.”

“Right, the ones where I might careen into a building or whatever,” Gen muttered, having heard this argument before.

“Yes,” he stated. “And also, that way you can be my eyes from a stationary place.”

Gen crossed her arms in front of her chest. “I don’t like this.”

He looked down at her, his golden eyes twinkling in the afternoon sunshine. “Like a dragon circling high above, your oversight can prevent missteps without stifling initiative.”

“But I have to question this delivery driver,” Gen asked. “I have to find out where they are getting the drugs and anything else I can about chuckle hog.”

“I can talk,” he said with authority. “And I’m not sure that you’ve noticed, but I’m quite intimidating.”

She shrugged. “For some, you might be. But still, I want to be a part of this with you.”

“You’re learning about leadership principles right now,” he said, as if it were a question.

“Right. So?” Gen questioned.

“A leader who cannot step back and allow those around them to fight, loses the chance to discover the strengths of others,” he replied. “You can’t fight every battle on your own. You must be willing to sit out, and in doing so, you create an army that can last longer and overcome greater odds. Remember, your job as a leader is to promote other leaders, not to create a league of followers.”

Gen nodded. “So, you’re doing this to help me with my leadership skills, aren’t you?”

“I think that it might be a good learning opportunity,” Emperor answered slyly.

“Okay, well, you’re not going anywhere unless we figure out which delivery driver to go after,” Gen offered, motioning to Grand Park below. Again, the area was filled with food trucks for the lunch hour. There were the ones that Liv had described that seemed fairly normal with typical activity around them.
